Stories That Make Us Cry

by | Aug 5, 2022 | favorites, personal

Stories reveal and connect us with important lessons in our life.

We’ve all been there when we are deeply involved in a great story and we can feel our emotions start to build to bursting with a good cry. Sometimes we might be in the dark watching a movie, other times we’re reading a story aloud to our children when all of a sudden, we can not speak…

Stories that pack an emotional punch teach us something very important about our own lives. They show us what we cherish and value, what we yearn for, or are scared to lose. We might relate to the situation in real life and we are preparing to possibly face a similar situation in the future, or we have faced it in the past and are still trying to make sense of it. They might even convict us to something that we are currently experiencing that we really need to change in our lives right away.

My teens told me “you cry during any movie that you don’t fall asleep in the middle of.” There might be a tiny smidge of truth in that. Movies that pack an emotional punch are valuable to my experience in this world. There is a distinction between what “sad” means to me though. I movie can be logically sad, the characters might have really sad circumstances all around them… but there is a certain level of resonance that moves the audience to actually feel something rather than watching emotions happen on screen or page.

Here are some of my favorites:

BOOKS

The Wild Robot

I certainly did not expect to get choked up and weep during this darling middle school book with wonderfully fun illustrations throughout. The relationship between the robot (who was not programmed to have feelings), and its’ adopted baby goose was moving beyond words. When the goose grew up to fly off in his first migration, I fell apart. Any parent whose teens are nearing college years will relate to the leaving of the nest and letting go phase of life.

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Last Battle

The entire series is an evergreen classic and the books should be read in the order that C.S. Lewis intended to make the most sense. All of the books are wonderful, but this last book I can not read without my throat tightening up and tears blurring my vision. I won’t ruin the ending if you haven’t read it yet.

The Notebook

I read this book for the first time in the late 90s. I never saw the movie. The love that the husband has for his wife, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, is so true to the bittersweet reality that some couples have to face after a lifetime of memories together. This book will produce sobbing, particularly if you know someone with memory loss. The love between the couple is inspiring and cathartic.

Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster

I bought the book after hearing a review on “Read Aloud Revival.” I read this with my teen daughter and we both LOVED the entire story. We ugly cried many times together, we couldn’t wait to read the next chapter. This is a story about sacrificing ourselves for the ones we love. It reveals the gruesome hardship of the children who cleaned chimneys before Labor Laws were created.

TV / MOVIE / FILM

Wolf Children

How could a Japanese animated movie filled with beautiful, whimsical landscapes and characters be such a tear-jerker?! The loss of a father to a young wife and brand new mother is hard enough, but bringing up babies that turn into wolf pups and trying to protect them from the world is quite another challenge. On top of that, the hard choice of human life – or to leave and embrace the life of a wolf – is heart-wrenching to a mother who has already lost her husband. A must-watch!

Song of the Sea

This is my #1 favorite animated movie. The artistry in the animation/illustration is beyond stunning. I cried throughout this movie because of the impending loss of a wife and mother to two young children. As if this wasn’t enough, the fate of the youngest child is tied to her mother’s legacy. The love of her brother also is moving as he desperately tries to change fate. Watch it TODAY!

Saving Mr. Banks

This is an incredible film that describes the difficult relationship between the author of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers, and Walt Disney. The emotional part for me was specifically the lens of her perception of her parents’ troubles and how her aunt swept in like Mary Poppins to save their family. Also, her desire to “save” her father’s reputation through the character of Mr. Banks in her stories. You have to see it for yourself if you haven’t already.

Two - Short Animated Film

This was a 4th-year student’s (Lindsay Scanlan) short animated film project. Our daughter is an animation major and she wanted me to see this. Yes – tears!! The tie of twin siblings is powerful. Don’t need to say anymore, just watch it.

This Beautiful Fantastic

I can’t even tell you how many times I have watched this movie. The softening of hearts, growth of trust, relationship building, and facing our fears, are beyond “beautiful” in this film. I have cried every single time.

Hook

As a parent watching this film or reading this story, it’s an exceptionally convicting story of the monster of time and how our well-intentioned busyness steals us away from those we love most: our family. We can’t get time back. The battle of making a living to take care of our families is important and this is why this juggle exists throughout the generations. I love this particular version of the Peter Pan classic.

Lion

The emotional and physical journey of an adopted child trying to put the puzzle pieces of their biological beginnings is epic for the entire family. The tension between siblings and the love of the adoptive parent’s encouragement is impactful. But also, imagine his biological mother who never intended for him to disappear in the first place! This is an incredible solving of a mystery and an amazing story.

Bluey - "Baby Race" Episode

My 18-year-old daughter made me watch this. I was in tears within moments! This adorable show for young children spoke right to my mama’s heart and the worry of raising a first baby! The comparisons to your peers’ abilities to be the perfect parent raising the child that does everything the best and first. And the end… oh wow! You’ll be choked up too. Trust me!

Charlotte's Web

Nobody likes to think about where pork comes from! We are fearful for the sweet pig’s life and want her to be saved from slaughter. But the tipping point of emotion is actually the sacrificial love of her dear arachnid friend: Charlotte. Greater love has no one than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Turning Red

This is a hilarious coming-of-age movie! You might be wondering – why the tears?! If you are a mother to a daughter, this will hit you square in the chest. This relationship is full of wanting the very best for our kids out of love. However, this intense love can result in an overbearing threshold that gets crossed and hurtful. The love of mother and daughter is powerful and reciprocal. Neither wants to cross this line and yet, it happens so fast! Get the tissues ready. * Note, that this movie may not be appropriate for all families. I watched this with an 18-year-old… not a 12-old! The perspective was different to this time of life than it could have been to a younger audience.

Marley & Me

If you have, or had, a dog in your home – the joys, unconditional love, and sorrows of loss… is a rollercoaster that broadens our hearts and makes us better humans.

A Dog's Purpose

The same can be said from the previous commentary on “Marley & Me.” This movie will have you crying hard – and then appeased the next with newborn puppies – and repeat. It’s intense. Be ready!

Forrest Gump

This movie is a classic. It blends humor, history, innocent hope, and the harsh reality of life together. Our perspective as a viewer is different from Forrest’s which magnifies the entire incredible saga and influence he has on everyone around him.

Up

I don’t think there is a single person who can watch the introduction to this movie without losing it. When we lose the one that we love most, we want to shut the world out and protect ourselves. Living life again is a healing journey. People still need you in their life. I love the beginning and the end… the middle was… meh… Still an impactful movie though.

Life is Beautiful

ALL stories, books, and movies about the horrors of the holocaust are 100% tragic and terrifying. We will cry during each and every one. The reason why I point this particular movie out is the juxtaposition of a father trying to keep life “light-hearted” in the face of evil for the sake of his family is astonishingly inspiring. To imagine this entire situation is bringing me to tears as I type this.
